History Of College

Calcutta Girls' B.T. College, established in 1965, stands as a beacon of women's teacher education in West Bengal. The institution was founded under the visionary leadership of Latika Gupta, a distinguished educationist and social entrepreneur, who dedicated her life to the cause of women's empowerment through education

Born into privilege, Mrs. Gupta chose not to be swayed by material comforts, dedicating her life instead to the empowerment of women through education. A brilliant alumna of Bethune School and the University of Calcutta, Latika Gupta completed her M.A. and B.T. (now B.Ed.) degrees and began her career with a firm belief in education as a transformative force in society. In 1945, along with her husband, Prof. K.S. Gupta, a brilliant scholar of Edinburgh University and eminent educationist, she established Calcutta Girls' Academy, and then, laid the foundation of Calcutta Girls' B.T. College to advance quality teacher education exclusively for women.

Her dream of creating a centre for academic excellence was supported by many eminent personalities, including Justice J. K. Biswas, magician P. C. Sorcar, Dr. A. B. Mukherjee, Mrs. Labanya Prava Dutta, Dr. Kalidas Nag, Barrister N. K. Ghosh, and Prof. S. N. Sen, former Vice Chancellor of the University of Calcutta.

Latika Gupta's commitment extended beyond institutional development. She was actively involved in numerous social initiatives for the welfare of underprivileged women and held key academic and administrative positions at the University of Calcutta, including membership in the Syndicate, Academic Council, College Committee, Board of Residents, and Board of Discipline. Her dynamic leadership and administrative acumen contributed immensely to the college's growth and reputation.

Over the decades, Calcutta Girls' B.T. College has remained true to its founding vision-offering quality teacher education while nurturing values, research, leadership, and service. The college continues to uphold the legacy of its founder by empowering women educators who contribute meaningfully to the fabric of society.
